Lady Pamela Hicks told the ITV documentary My years with the Queen that the Monarch is “thrifty” when it comes to her clothes. The Queen wrote to her mother to ask if she needed to buy so many new dresses. But the Queen Mother gave her a very sharp reply.
Lady Pamela said: “The Queen did send a message to her mother wondering if she needed so many new dresses every year.
“She got a very tart reply.”
The revelation comes amid Royal Family chaos with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The couple reiterated their desire for financial independence which has seen them sign deals with Netflix and Spotify.

Royal commentator Richard Eden has said the royals will be compared to the Sussexes in future years as they set up a “rival Royal Family” in the US.
Speaking to Palace Confidential on MailPlus, Mr Eden said: “I think that for years to come, William and Kate will be defined by Harry and Meghan as well.
“There is something of a rival Royal Family really that Harry and Meghan are making an effort to establish.
“They will be rivals across the water.
It comes as William felt like his brother had “blindsided” the Queen and behaved in an “insulting and disrespectful way,” following the surprise launch of the SussexRoyal website last year, according to a senior royal source.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s announcement, outlining their own plans for the future, upset William greatly ahead of a royal family meeting to negotiate the terms of “Megxit,” the Sunday Times magazine reported.
Following a decree from the Queen, the couple conceded that they could not use the word “royal” for personal projects, but said that the monarchy had “no jurisdiction” overseas.
A royal source told the Sunday Times that the content of Harry and Meghan’s response had been “staggering”.
“That was it for William, he felt they’d blindsided the Queen in such an insulting and disrespectful way,” they said.
